Coastal Kindness in Kleinemonde

WHAT IS COASTAL KINDNESS IN KLEINEMONDE AND WHAT DO THEY DO!

Coastal Kindness in Kleinemonde was started when we realized that there is really very little emergency medical backup for the residents in Kleinemonde. The closest doctors and ambulance services are in Port Alfred, and it can take up to 2 hours for an ambulance to respond.

If somebody should fall, have a stroke, or a heart attack in Seafield, it would be a crisis as no immediate help was available.

Coastal Kindness in Kenton was started during covid as a committee initiative whereby community volunteers could assist residents in Kenton who suffered from covid and needed assistance with ventilators, collection of medicine, and in some cases meals. They also now realize that there is a lot more that can be done by volunteers for their community.

Frik van Rooyen, together with other Kleinemonde residents, formed a committee of volunteers from within the Kleinemonde, and with the help of Coastal Kindness in Kenton, they started a Coastal Kindness branch in Kleinemonde to address the problem of an emergency medical response.

Since the first community meeting earlier this year, Coastal Kindness has managed to collect R 65 000. Utilizing those funds, they purchased an AED (Heart shock machine), Oxygen cylinder, and various other emergency equipment needed during an emergency.

The volunteer committee consists of Frik van Rooyen, Paula Stander, Anette Rex, Amande Swart, Tjaart Oberholzer, Caren Evans and Anne Meyer.

Together with Gardmed Ambulance services and Multi Security in Kleinemonde, Coastal Kindness started the Emergency Medical Response service.  All the equipment is held at Multi Security’s offices and in the case of an emergency will be delivered speedily by a Multi Security Response person. One of our 1st Responders (Buddy) will be dispatched to the scene of the crisis and they will assist the person in need until Guardmed or a professional medical service arrives on the scene.

To date, Coastal Kindness staff have trained approx. 80 people in CPR, Gardmed trained nine of our volunteer residents in First Aid, and we can now offer an Emergency Response with at least 8 people in our 1st Responders Group to assist you as a ‘Buddy’.

Emergency Medical Response does not replace any professional service but will be available to assist any person in distress until professional services arrive. Although our 1st Responders ‘Buddies’ have all had Medical Training of some sort, they will assist you as would any other Good Samaritan, person, or neighbor would do.

WHAT WE ARE NOT!

This service will NOT replace your normal medical practitioner and should only be used in the case of an emergency. It is available to everybody in Kleinemonde, Fish River Cottages, Riet River Cottages, and the farms. You DO NOT need to be a Multi Security Client to make use of the service.

However, if you do belong to Multi Security and a Response vehicle was dispatched from Gardme ie. an ambulance or Medical Response Vehicle, the cost will be covered by Multi Security.

IMPORTANT

Please don’t contact Anette or Paula or any other 1st responder in case of an emergency. Use the Multi Security contact channels to ensure a faster response. This way the right emergency response team will be mobilized soonest! If you are unsure or don’t have any of the above channels available, call a neighbor or friend to help you contact multi security.

MEDICAL RECORDS

Attached herewith is also the form suggested by Paula that you should complete. Keep the completed form and a copy of your ID accessible i.e., in a peanut butter jar, on top of your fridge for. Gardmed are aware that that is where they will look for any information about the person, especially in an event where they are unable to communicate. Complete this form for every person in your household. This information will only be used by the response team if needed and can help them tremendously to assess your medical status and possible medical response. Forms are available from any member below. Download
